A season of lost mittens

I feel like the kitten that lost its mitten. Well, glove to be more accurate. And it was a lovely glove at that — almost straight out of its Christmas day packaging and still in mint condition.

In Tennessee, I hardly ever lost mittens or other winter paraphernalia simply because I almost never had to use them. Hats, scarves, and gloves all once sat in a small box in our hall closet, only to be brought out for one, maybe two, months out of the year.

In Maine, our winter gear box has grown much bigger. In fact, we’ve split it into two boxes — his and hers. This makes sorting through the many pairs of gloves all the easier. (And I do own mittens now. In fact, they’re from the Alpaca place right here in Amherst.) Seeing as how this is only our first year in Maine, I have a feeling that we’re gonna need bigger winter gear boxes next year. I hear winter gear tends to grow exponentially here.

Unless, that is, you tend to lose them like me.

I wonder at the amount of lost mittens and gloves out there in the great wilds of Maine. Separated from their mirror twin mate and leaving one cold hand on these bitter cold days this winter. Is there a giant Lost & Found box somewhere in Maine where we can look for our lost hand-socks?

While I have plenty of gloves to replace the lost one, I still lament the lost glove. (which I think might still be in the Bangor Parks & Rec lot buried under mounds of snow. If you find it, friendly Samaritan, please let me know!)
